Cost Estimation - 5 times Less costly than conventional
Two skimming concepts were compared both to achieve 25 km skimming width:
The costs were estimated for the north pacific garbage patch, using litter density numbers found on e.g. the NOAA website. The calculation can also be used for other locations if data is available like the Rio de Janeiro bay area. The full spread-sheet can be found on OneDrive.
The Ocean Cleanup made a similar calculation for their concept in TOC Feasibility Study Page 32 and used Floating Horizon as one benchmark.
- A common oil skimming rig which might be modified to skim marine litter out of the ocean.
- And a hybrid combination of 3700 autonomous skimming vessels (ASV) plus seven small offshore vessels and one mother-ship which will house all fixing and waste post-processing facilities.

Remarks
I could not find a detailed calculation to build on. Therefore I have created this spreadsheet which you can find openly on OneDrive too. It is an open document and can be viewed by everyone. I do not grant that the given numbers are correct. But I do my best to provide the most confident numbers to date. I am editing and improving it once in a while as I receive new more confident numbers or if I find cost aspects which have been left out before.
Let me know if you have better or different numbers on hand or if you are keen to use this calculation foundation for your own project.
