Municipal Solid Waste

1.3 billion tons of Solid Municipal Waste are produced per year today. [WorldWatch].

The global total amount of produced waste is difficult to estimate. Best numbers are known for those parts based on urban structures. The Waste created there is called Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). We have carried together statements and graphics concerning MSW and recycling.
Ten years ago there were 2.9 billion urban residents who generated about 0.64 kg of MSW per person per day (0.68 billion tonnes per year).
This report estimates that today these amounts have increased to about 3 billion residents generating 1.2 kg per person per day (1.3 billion tonnes per year). By 2025 this will likely increase to 4.3 billion urban residents generating about 1.42 kg/capita/day of municipal solid waste (2.2 billion tonnes per year).
Despite its importance, reliable global MSW information is not typically available. Data is often inconsistent, incomparable and incomplete; however as suggested in this report there is now enough MSW information to estimate global amounts and trends.

By the middle of the century, 9 000 million human beings on the planet are expected to generate over 13 100 million tonnes of waste – about 20 per cent more than in 2009. The general rule is that the rich produce more waste; but a certain level of development allows for some decoupling of economic growth and waste production (cleaner production; waste prevention campaigns).
This increase in waste generation is most apparent in urban areas. Today more than 50 per cent of the world’s population
lives in cities. By 2050 this number is expected to rise to around 70 per cent, with 50 per cent of this total urban population in Asian countries. [source: UNEP]

... household garbage [...] in developed countries [..] might account for [...] 20 to 30 percent of overall municipal solid waste (MSW). The rest is commercial and industrial (C&I) and construction and demolition (C&D) waste.
[...] 20 percent of all waste exported from the EU is not recycled but ends up in landfills.
[...] 70 percent of MSW is driven to landfills [...] 11 percent is converted into energy through thermal and other waste-to-energy systems, and 19 percent is either recycled or subject to biological treatments like composting. [dimplomaticcourier]
